Let’s talk about Laser Genesis and IPL!

Combining these two laser facial treatments is called 2D and helps combat the appearance of sun damage, fine lines, dark spots, and broken capillaries. Common questions we’ve received from patients include, What is the difference between Laser Genesis and IPL treatments? Can you do them together? Should you do them separately? And, Should you only treat your skin with one kind of laser? So, we will explore these amazing laser treatments that have been truly transformative for so many of our patients!

Laser Genesis by Cutera xeo restores your skin’s healthy appearance by addressing visible imperfections such as sun damage, fine lines, redness, and scarring. Laser Genesis stimulates the skin’s renewal process by gently warming the skin. Gentle micro-pulses of laser energy are sent to activate collagen remodeling to give your skin a smooth, radiant complexion. Laser Genesis is ideal for treating mild facial redness and acne scarring. The downtime is minimal—you may see redness post-treatment lasting up to 24 hours. Christiana Immordino, Lincoln Park Aesthetician and Laser Light Therapist, talks about Laser Genesis and the 2D, “It is becoming one of my favorite treatments. It is painless and actually quite relaxing as you typically just feel mild heat on the skin. Laser genesis heats up the upper dermis which stimulates the growth and production of collagen. There is no downtime with Laser Genesis and typically done in a series of 3-6 sessions, with 4 weeks in between. Laser Genesis helps minimize the appearance of pores, fine lines/wrinkles, and improves rosacea. My acne clients are really loving this treatment for the post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and rotate with chemical peels.”

IPL is also referred to as Intense Pulsed Light Therapy or the Limelight Photofacial by Cutera, and is a non-invasive approach to skin revitalization. The procedure improves tone and skin imperfections associated with aging and photo-damage. IPL is used for conditions on the face, neck, chest, and hands including sun damage, rosacea, broken capillaries, age spots, freckles, brown spots, and red or ruddy skin.  During the treatment, you might experience mild discomfort and feel a snapping when the laser pulses on your skin. Afterward, you’ll experience mild redness and a residual heat sensation up to several hours post treatment. You will also start to see brown spots come to the surface in the next few days following treatment called “peppering.” Those spots will flake off to reveal repaired skin! We recommend 3-6 sessions to see optimal results.

Like we said earlier, the combination treatment of Laser Genesis and IPL is called 2D, and they work together to remove redness and skin imperfections. Ashley Powers, Lead Aesthetician and Educator says, “I love 2D because it does a great job improving overall skin tone. When done separately, each modality is only treating one tone within the spectrum. For example, Laser Genesis only targets red and pinks, where the IPL is the most impressive on brown spots and hyperpigmentation. Combination therapies will always yield bigger and better results as opposed to doing them separately a couple weeks apart and it is because you are treating with two different heat depths requiring more healing, which means more collagen and elastin. Plus, you’ll experience zero social downtime. You are getting the best of both treatments in one basically.” Christina Immordino expresses a similar sentiment to Ashley, “By combining the two your are getting the benefits of not only targeting the sunspots and broken capillaries but also targeting the general redness of the skin and stimulating collagen and elastin, two treatments in one sitting!”

Laser facials are not for all skin types, we recommend coming in for a complimentary consultation to see if 2D is right for you!
