    What is Microneedling?

At SpaDerma, we use the only FDA approved Microneedling device, called SkinPen by Bellus Medical. The device uses needles to pierce the skin in a controlled and precise pattern that works to tighten, lift, and rejuvenate the skin (Don’t be afraid—you’ll be numbed!). It’s effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, and surgical and acne scars. Microneedling is safe for all skin types, has a short treatment time, and minimal discomfort without much downtime.

Oh, and for those of you who have seen a DIY version that you can buy online please remember, it’s best to be left to the experts!

    How Should I Prepare?

We ask that patients discontinue use of retinoids and prescription topicals 14 days prior to your treatment. Wait until active acne and/or any possible sunburn has subsided. If prone to cold sores, take Valtrex or something similar for a few days prior to treatment. This treatment cannot be performed on pregnant or breast-feeding patients due to the ingredients in the numbing cream applied before treatment.

What can I expect during the treatment?

It’s easy to fit microneedling into your schedule, as this treatment usually takes up to an hour to complete. Your SpaDerma provider will cleanse and numb your face, preparing you for treatment. Next, your provider will apply a serum packed with hydrating ingredients and antioxidants and begin using the SkinPen microneedling device.

While receiving treatment you may feel pressure and a vibrating sensation. Immediately after treatment you may be red and feel like you have a moderate to severe sunburn or your skin may feel warm and tighter than usual. This is normal and will usually subside within 1 to 2 hours and will normally recover within 24 hours.

What Should I do After the Treatment?

After the procedure, your skin will be protected with post-procedure cream and SPF.

Your Aesthetician will prescribe post-procedure skincare to help soothe, calm, and protect the skin. Active skincare can resume on the 4th day following treatment.

We ask that you avoid sun exposure for 48 hours post-treatment and always make sure your hands are clean before touching the treated area. No exercising or strenuous activity for the first 24 hours following treatment. The next morning, your skin may feel a little tight, but you’ll notice that redness has faded from the previous day. The micro-wounds heal quickly!

    When will I see results?

Most patients see results 1-2 weeks post-treatment. They report their skin looks smooth, glowing, and tighter than it did before treatment. If you are looking for deeper results such as for scarring we recommend multiple treatments—talk to your SpaDerma Aesthetician to find the best plan for your skin.
